References in shared files

Layer takes care of references in shared spreadsheets.

If there are references to data outside the shared area, Layer transforms the references into values. There will be no reference errors, and the recipient of the data will see the same values as the person who shared it with them.

References in the master spreadsheet

The references inside your uploaded Layer spreadsheet will always be maintained. When accepting changes from somebody in your team, all references of your spreadsheet will be maintained and reevaluated as long as the contributor didn't explicitly change the cell value.

Example

Assuming

A1: =B1+B2
B1: 1
B2: 2

  • If you were to share cells A1 and B1 as part of a range but not B2, your collaborators would see the value "3" in A1 but not the original formula.

  • If your collaborator changes the value of B1 to "2", the value of A1 will remain unchanged for them.

  • Once your collaborator has submitted their changes, you will get to review those changes with the formula kept intact in A1.

  • If you accept the B1 cell value change, the formula in A1 will be reevaluated, and its value will change to "4".

TL;DR

A cell with references to cells
inside the shared area

A cell with references to cells
outside the shared area

All cell references are retained.

The formula is converted into its current value. The formula is maintained in the master spreadsheet and reevaluated after data review.
